6 Facts about Clothing and Sustainability: a Sewlar Punk Zine

This year alone, I’ve run 5 clothing swaps!

I created a mini-zine to invite people to learn more about how swapping and sharing clothing is a critical part of sustainability. Now you can print your own! Download the attached document which includes a little poster on the backside.

Here is a link to how to fold your zine.

Print it at 100% scale so the folds and cuts end up in the right place, print double sided to get the poster or print just page 2 on the back of scrap paper!

  1.  Only 10-20% of what gets donated to thrift stores actually ends up on the sales floor. Clothing swaps are a more reliable way to ensure your used clothes stay in your community.

  2. Most clothing returned online is NOT resold. Often it is simply thrown away because it is cheaper for the business.

  3. Textile recycling is energy intensive and “downcycles” rather than recycles. That fiber will never be clothing again, maybe just carpet padding.

  4. “...extending the average life of clothes by just three months of active use per item would lead to a 5 to 10 percent reduction in each [item’s] carbon, water and waste footprints”

  5. The Right to Adequate Clothing is recognized by many human rights organizations around the globe.

  6. Americans buy over 60% more clothing now than we did in the year 2000 leading some to claim that we have enough clothing for the next 6 generations
