January Update

I regret that it’s been so long since I’ve written, but you’ll be hearing from me a lot more in the coming months! Here's a little digest of news stories that I think will kick off 2024 on a hopeful note:

  • First up, an interesting study on the microfibers created during the fabric cutting process. Obviously, in costume production we cut far less than a manufacturer, but I still found this fascinating.

  • This is not news but an article I recently read on the concept of “EcoFeminism” and I think you’ll enjoy this as much as I did!

  • Ontario is launching a 4 year study of improving sustainability in film, read all about it here.

  • Sometimes sustainability finds friends in unlikely places, Walmart and Goodwill are teaming up to transform textile recycling. This is a sign that the circular economy is moving from niche to mainstream.

  • Even Amazon is getting into the game of sustainability by introducing AI sizing to reduce returns (if you don’t already know, most online returns to Amazon and everywhere get thrown out).

  • The EU has banned the destruction of unsold clothes and shoes. This is a huge win as many goods get destroyed every year.

I’ll be focusing on Conscious Costume nearly full time this year. So let me know what topics you’re most interested to see covered here!
