Disabled and Proud
Disability Pride Month celebrates the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA was just a first step and is limited in how much it actually supports disabled people.
Did you know that many people who live with “invisible” disabilities often don’t qualify or even apply for disability aid because it limits our assets to $2,000 at any given time? This makes it impossible to save up for a rainy day, a house, or even get married (because your spouse’s assets count). Instead, many of us work through our disabilities, ending up completely exhausted by daily activities.
We’re proud that our team is made up of disabled individuals and work hard to be an inclusive and accessible workplace.
Disability-led activism makes the world a better place for everyone. Here are some ways that our disability accommodations serve the whole community:
Building with elevator: important both for mobility access and for easy transportation of large quantities of costumes in and out of the building. When we were looking for a new space, having an option for stair free access was a priority. While our current elevator situation is not ideal (freight elevator accessed via shared loading doc), we will continue to ensure that mobility access is a central part of choosing venues for all events.
Prioritizing flexibility: we do not have late penalties both for disabled people who may forget due to neurodivergence or have an unexpected flare up but it also benefits all the busy freelancers who work with us who may need a little extra grace to accommodate their schedule. As an independent designer, I remember how stressful it was to get things back by specific deadlines and I treasured the people who offered me grace and flexibility so I could work smarter instead of harder.
Covid precautions: by protecting the most vulnerable in our community with masks and air purifiers, everyone is protected from contagious diseases and allergens! We still need air purifiers in our new space and look forward to resuming our Covid Cautious swaps in 2027!
