10 Upcycling Artists for your Holiday Shopping

I am FED UP with all the plastic and the ads for CRAP this time of year. I cringe walking by aisles of single use Christmas decorations that will be broken and in the trash by January 2nd. I mute the ads showing how your family’s holiday joy hinges on purchasing new kitchen gear, how the pinnacle of showing love is with buying new jewelry, or why you need a whole new wardrobe to gloat to your relatives. It’s sickening how normalized this has all become.

For me, the essence of holiday traditions is the idea of reuse. I am revisiting decorations that only come out for 1/12th of the year but who have become like old friends wrapped in decrepit tissue paper from the ‘80s; uncovering handed-down servingware to share handed-down holiday recipes. When I consider sustainability and celebration, I am reminded that our current consumerist behaviors have only existed for less than a century.

My goal is to make sure you have the tools you need to create more sustainable holiday memories from shopping to wrapping. I invite you to join me for free virtual office hours to discuss more sustainable holiday ideas!

We’ve also seen this year how billionaires can impact our democracy as well as our economy. I challenge you to buy nothing from Amazon for all of December this year! Here are some alternatives to get you started:
